How a Simple Conversation With My Students Led Me to Support English Speakers Settling in France

It all started with conversations, not a business plan

Quand j’ai commencé à accueillir des anglophones en immersion française, mon objectif était simple : les aider à parler français avec plus de confiance, dans un environnement naturel et bienveillant. Mais très vite, nos conversations ont dépassé la grammaire et le vocabulaire.

When I first started welcoming English speakers into French immersion, my goal was simple: help them speak French with more confidence, in a natural and supportive environment. But very quickly, our conversations went far beyond grammar and vocabulary.

Mes étudiants me posaient des questions sur la vie réelle en France. Pas seulement “comment dire ceci ou cela”, mais plutôt : Comment fonctionne le système administratif ? Pourquoi est-ce si compliqué d’ouvrir un compte ? Comment acheter une maison ici ? Est-ce normal de recevoir ce type de courrier ?

My students asked questions about real life in France. Not just “how do you say this or that,” but questions like: How does the administrative system work? Why is opening a bank account so complicated? How do you buy a house here? Is it normal to receive letters like this?

Ces questions étaient légitimes. Et j’adorais y répondre.

These questions were completely legitimate. And I loved answering them.

Comprendre la langue est une chose. Comprendre le système en est une autre.

Understanding the language is one thing. Understanding the system is another.

Même les étudiants qui avaient un bon niveau de français se sentaient parfois perdus face à certaines démarches. Non pas parce qu’ils ne comprenaient pas les mots, mais parce que le système français a ses propres règles, sa propre logique, et parfois ses propres complexités.

Even students with a good level of French sometimes felt lost when facing certain procedures. Not because they didn’t understand the words, but because the French system has its own rules, its own logic, and sometimes its own complexity.

Pendant les immersions, il n’était pas rare que nous passions du temps à lire ensemble un email d’une administration, à décrypter un document immobilier, ou simplement à expliquer ce qu’on attendait d’eux dans une situation précise.

During immersions, it wasn’t uncommon for us to spend time reading an email from the administration together, deciphering a property document, or simply explaining what was expected from them in a specific situation.

Ces moments faisaient naturellement partie de l’expérience. Et pour moi, c’était un plaisir de les accompagner.

These moments naturally became part of the experience. And for me, it was a pleasure to support them.

Petit à petit, l’accompagnement a dépassé le cadre de l’immersion

Little by little, the support went beyond immersion

Avec le temps, certains étudiants sont restés en France, ont acheté une résidence secondaire, ou ont commencé à préparer leur relocalisation. Naturellement, ils continuaient à me poser des questions. Parfois sur un contrat. Parfois sur un email. Parfois sur une situation plus complexe.

Over time, some students stayed in France, bought second homes, or began preparing their relocation. Naturally, they continued to reach out with questions. Sometimes about a contract. Sometimes about an email. Sometimes about more complex situations.

Et progressivement, je me suis retrouvée à les aider de manière plus concrète, plus régulière. Pas parce que c’était prévu. Mais parce que c’était logique.

And gradually, I found myself helping them in more concrete, ongoing ways. Not because it was planned. But because it felt natural.

Une expérience qui a tout changé

An experience that changed everything

Il y a 2 ans, j’ai accompagné une étudiante dans l’achat de sa résidence secondaire en Provence. Ce projet représentait beaucoup pour elle, mais aussi beaucoup de stress. Je l’ai aidée à comprendre les étapes, à gérer la logistique, à anticiper certains problèmes liés à la copropriété, et à naviguer les différentes démarches.

2 years ago, I supported a student through the purchase of her second home in Provence. This project meant a lot to her—but it was also a stressful process. I helped her understand the steps, manage logistics, anticipate certain co-ownership issues, and navigate the various procedures.

Mais l’accompagnement ne s’est pas arrêté à l’achat.

But the support didn’t stop at the purchase.

Je l’ai aidée à meubler son logement, à organiser les livraisons, à mettre en place les contrats d’eau, d’électricité, et de téléphonie. Je me suis même rendue sur place en son absence pour superviser l’installation et m’assurer que tout se passait comme elle le souhaitait.

I helped her furnish her home, organize deliveries, set up water, electricity, and phone contracts. I even went there in her absence to oversee the installation and make sure everything was exactly as she wanted.

Je l’ai également accompagnée pour comprendre et payer certaines taxes, et pour s’assurer que tout était en ordre.

I also supported her in understanding and paying certain taxes, and ensuring everything was properly set up.

Et surtout, je l’ai aidée à trouver un peu de sérénité dans un processus qui peut être très intense.

And most importantly, I helped her find peace of mind in a process that can feel overwhelming.

C’est à ce moment-là que tout est devenu évident

That’s when everything became clear

Après cette expérience, mon mari et moi avons réalisé que cet accompagnement répondait à un vrai besoin. Beaucoup d’anglophones rêvent de vivre en France. Mais entre le rêve et la réalité, il y a souvent des étapes complexes, stressantes, et parfois solitaires. Et nous savions que nous pouvions les aider.

After this experience, my husband and I realized this kind of support met a very real need. Many English speakers dream of living in France. But between the dream and the reality, there are often complex, stressful, and sometimes lonely steps. And we knew we could help.

Ce que j’aime le plus, ce n’est pas seulement enseigner le français. C’est aider les personnes à se sentir bien ici. Voir le moment où la confusion devient clarté. Quand le stress devient confiance.

What I love most isn’t just teaching French. It’s helping people feel at home here. Seeing the moment when confusion becomes clarity. When stress becomes confidence.

Et quand la France cesse d’être simplement un rêve… pour devenir un vrai chez-soi.

And when France stops being just a dream… and becomes a real home.
