The Eurovision Song Contest has been around since 1956. This singing competition leaves no one indifferent. Some find it cheesy, and others love it! It must be recognized that this is the musical event that generates the most spectators and involves astronomical sums invested in special effects and scenography! It's a real show !
What exactly is Eurovision?
It is a competition where all the countries of the EBU (the European Broadcasting Union) compete in songs. There are 41 countries this year that are competing for the contest. But through the years the geographic borders have been largely pushed back. For example, in 1973, Israel was the first extra-European country to be part of Eurovision Song Contest. More recently, Australia joined the group! The tragedies of History with the dislocation of certain countries such as Yugoslavia and the USSR have also made the number of participants skyrocket!
However, even if this event seems light and joyful, it is nonetheless a reflection of the diplomatic tensions that exist between certain states. It is also an opportunity to note the agreements in principle between the "friendly" countries. Indeed, each country assigns a score to all participants ranging from one to twelve. Discord between countries has given rise to many surprises!
In 1975, for example, Greece, during a Cypriot conflict with its neighbor, withdrew from the competition following the arrival of Turkey. In 1978, it was Jordan who stopped broadcasting because Israel was in the lead, and the next day announced that Belgium had won although Belgium was second!
France has not won Eurovision for over 40 years. The latest victory was Marie Myriam with a song called "The bird and the child". Yet this year, France seemed to be one of the favorites! She was in the lead among bookmakers. Our representative, Barbara Pravi had it all! And, I admit it, I believed in it!
This Parisian-style singer-songwriter has a very pretty face and a voice worthy of a modern-day Edith Piaf. No wonder she was at the top of the charts. I invite you to listen to her song: "Voila"
But that was without counting the performance of the Maneskin group which represented Italy. They stole the victory from us with just a few votes! And here again Eurovision ended against a backdrop of controversy because it seems that the singer of the group Maneskin would have taken drugs in front of the cameras!
France would then have been first, but the victory would not have been straightforward! Finally, with the negative test results, Italy are holding onto their deserved victory. Barbara Pravi therefore remains in second place, but I am convinced that her singing career is launched and that we will often hear about her!
