C’est la finale de Roland Garros. J’ai fait un peu de tennis dans ma jeunesse mais je dois avouer que j’ai vite abandonné ! Je n’étais jamais allée à Roland Garros et j’ai profité du fait qu’Andréa soit chez moi en immersion de français en 2019 pour découvrir en même temps qu’elle cet endroit mythique !
Heureusement que Stéphane, qui lui connaissait bien les lieux, nous servait de guide ! C’est une vraie ville ! Nous sommes maintenant en 2021 et après six ans de travaux gigantesques, Roland-Garros a terminé sa métamorphose.
Le jardin des mousquetaires permet d’offrir un véritable espace d’aération et facilite la circulation des spectateurs entre les différentes sessions de la journée et de la soirée. De très belles statues de joueurs célèbres ornent également le site. C’est bien mieux qu’avant !
Andréa, Stéphane et moi avons donc assisté à une journée de tournois en 2019 et c’était une très belle expérience !
Je vais vous faire partager les impressions d’Andréa :

This is the Roland Garros final. I played a bit of tennis when I was young but I have to admit that I gave up quickly! I had never been to Roland Garros and I took advantage of the fact that Andréa was at home in French immersion in 2019 to discover this legendary place at the same time!
Fortunately Stéphane, who knew the area well, served as our guide! It's a real city! We are now in 2021 and after six years of gigantic work, Roland-Garros has completed its metamorphosis.
The garden of the musketeers provides a real ventilation space and facilitates the movement of spectators between the different sessions of the day and the evening. Very beautiful statues of famous players also adorn the site. It's much better than before!
Andréa, Stéphane and I therefore attended a day of tournaments in 2019 and it was a great experience!

Bonjour ! Je m’appelle Andréa et je suis australienne. Je connais Chantal depuis bientôt 5 ans car je fais chaque année une immersion de français chez elle. Elle est devenue une amie maintenant ! Elle sait que j’adore le tennis et du coup elle a organisé une journée à Roland Garros. C’était mon rêve !
Nous sommes allés à Roland Garros en train pour éviter les embouteillages. En voiture, on serait sûrement arrivés trop tard et on aurait risqué de louper une partie des matchs ! J’étais vraiment impatiente de découvrir cet endroit mythique !
C’était une journée parfaite ! Il faisait chaud mais pas trop et le ciel était un peu voilé. Chantal m’a dit que c’était mieux comme ça, parce que le court où nous avions nos places n’était pas couvert. C’était le court Susan Lenglen. Avec du soleil, je serais rentrée rouge « comme une écrevisse » ! J’ai la peau très claire !
Le court principal qui s’appelle Philippe Chatrier sera couvert l’année prochaine. C’est un toit rétractable composé de 11 ailes d’avion en hommage à Roland Garros qui était aviateur. Mais « les places sont plus difficiles à obtenir et beaucoup plus chères », - m’a dit Chantal.
Il parait que le court Susan Lenglen sera lui aussi couvert en 2022. C’est bien, ça permet d’avoir des matchs en soirée et il y aura moins d’interruptions à cause de la pluie !!
Chantal m’a expliqué que Susan Lenglen avait habité à Compiègne pas très loin de son village, et que c’est à 11 ans qu’elle a commencé le tennis. Elle est devenue une des premières stars internationales du tennis !

Hello ! My name is Andrea and I am from Australia. I have known Chantal for almost 5 years because I do a French immersion at her place every year. She's become a friend now! She knows I love tennis and so she organized a day at Roland Garros. It was my dream! We went to Roland Garros by train to avoid traffic jams. By car, we would surely have arrived too late and we would have risked missing some of the matches! I was really looking forward to discovering this mythical place!
It was a perfect day! It was hot but not too hot and the sky was a bit hazy. Chantal told me it was better that way, because the court where we had our seats was not covered. It was the sho Susan Lenglen court. With the sun, I would have come home red “like a crayfish”! I have very fair skin!
The main court called Philippe Chatrier will be covered next year. It is a retractable roof made up of 11 airplane wings in tribute to Roland Garros who was an aviator. But "the seats are more difficult to obtain and much more expensive", - Chantal told me.
It seems that the Susan Lenglen court will also be covered in 2022. That's better, it allows for games in the evening and there will be less interruptions due to the rain!!
Chantal explained to me that Susan Lenglen had lived in Compiègne not far from her village, and that it was when she was 11 that she started playing tennis. She became one of the first international tennis stars!
Pour le déjeuner, nous avons simplement fait une pause sandwichs et nous sommes allés prendre un café ! Waouh ! quelle foule ! Il fallait « jouer des coudes » pour se frayer un chemin !
Les gens se précipitaient tous car ils ne voulaient pas perdre de temps ! On était serrés comme des sardines ! Il y a même une personne qui s’est trouvée mal !
Nous étions contents finalement de retrouver nos places ! Et là, il est tombé quelques gouttes de pluie et certaines personnes ont sorti leur parapluie ! C’était très bizarre, ce serait interdit de faire ça à l’Open d’Australie ! Mais on pouvait très bien voir quand même ! Les gradins sont très inclinés et du coup, ça ne gène pas la vue.
Avant de partir, j’ai acheté 3 casquettes et un tee-shirt dans une des boutiques de Roland Garros. Ce sera de beaux cadeaux pour mes amis. Nous sommes rentrés dans la soirée. On était fatigués mais on a passé une journée merveilleuse.

For lunch, we just took a sandwich break and went for a coffee! Wow! what a crowd! It was necessary to elbow our way through !
People were all rushing because they didn't want to waste time! We were crammed in like sardines! There is even one person who passed out!
We were finally happy to find our seats! And then, a few drops of rain fell and some people took out their umbrellas! It was very weird, it would be forbidden to do that at the Australian Open! But we could see very well anyway! The stands are very inclined so it does not interfere with the view.
Before leaving, I bought 3 caps and a tee-shirt in one of the boutiques of Roland Garros. They will be nice presents for my friends.We came back in the evening. We were tired but we had a marvelous day.
