🍫 Pain au chocolat or chocolatine? A French (fake) civil war

A student’s bakery experience in Occitanie

The strong attachment to the word chocolatine in the southwest

Il y a quelques jours, un étudiant m’a raconté une mésaventure assez drôle :

— « J’ai demandé un pain au chocolat à la boulangerie, mais la boulangère m’a regardé d’un air bizarre… Je l’ai mal prononcé ? »
— « Non, pas du tout ! C’est juste qu’ici, en Occitanie, comme dans tout le sud-ouest, on appelle ça une chocolatine. Et crois-moi, les habitants y tiennent beaucoup, car ce mot est devenu un symbole de leur identité linguistique et de leur culture régionale ! »

A few days ago, one of my students told me a funny story:

— “I asked for a pain au chocolat at the bakery, but the lady looked at me strangely… Did I pronounce it wrong?”
— “Not at all! It’s just that here in Occitanie, like everywhere in the southwest of France, people call it a chocolatine. And believe me, locals are very attached to this word, because it’s seen as part of their linguistic identity and regional pride!”

En réalité, cette guerre des mots n’a pas de vrai vainqueur, car les deux termes existent depuis plus de 160 ans.

The truth is, this civil war of words has no real winner, since both terms have existed for over 160 years.

The history of pain au chocolat and chocolatine

Different origins: dessert vs candy

👉 À l’origine, le pain au chocolat désignait plutôt un entremet (un petit dessert raffiné), tandis que la chocolatine était une sorte de bonbon. Ce n’est qu’au XXe siècle que la viennoiserie feuilletée au chocolat que nous connaissons aujourd’hui est apparue dans les boulangeries… sous les deux noms !

👉 Originally, pain au chocolat referred to a kind of fancy dessert (an entremet), while chocolatine was the name of a type of candy. The modern flaky pastry with chocolate inside only appeared in French bakeries in the 20th century… under both names!

La carte de France est assez claire : dans la majorité du pays, on parle de pain au chocolat, alors que dans le sud-ouest (Occitanie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), on dit chocolatine.

The map of France is quite clear : most of France uses pain au chocolat, while the southwest (Occitanie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine) proudly says chocolatine.

Pastry as cultural pride

Là où cela devient amusant, c’est que les habitants de chaque région défendent leur mot comme si leur identité en dépendait. Ce n’est pas seulement une question de viennoiserie : c’est une affaire de langue, de culture et de tradition.

What’s funny is how passionately people defend their word. It’s not just about pastry—it’s about language, culture, and tradition.

Alors, faut-il trancher ? Pas vraiment. Car au fond, que vous commandiez un pain au chocolat ou une chocolatine, vous aurez toujours le même plaisir : un feuilletage croustillant, un cœur fondant au chocolat… et un vrai goût de France. 

So, should we decide, which one is correct? Not really. Because at the end of the day, whether you order a pain au chocolat or a chocolatine, you’ll enjoy the same thing: a golden flaky pastry, a melting chocolate heart… and a true taste of France.
